Road To Etosha

The next day was a mere 225k, from Roy's through Grootfontein--and provisioning there--and Tsumeb, to Namutoni Camp, in Etosha National Park, where we would spend three days.
Ever-changing terrain, increasingly arid

Until a wrong turn takes us into Tsumeb, a bit of an oasis, in
every way

Mining town, as I recall; uranium

Parked for lunch near a sink-hole lake

One of Namibia's many curiosities are these road-side picnic
areas, literally every few kilometers, everywhere except the
deepest desert

Road hazard ahead

Roy's Rest Camp

Roy's has to win a prize for most expressive camp site, so far, or at least our introduction to a leading style of camp site decor in southern Africa...old jalopy parts rusting away in the sand and sun...
Entrance to Roy's...the mobiles a fair warning that this was no
KOA

Our site

More of the group

Typical decor

Well, more of a luke-warm spot

Reception/dining; we had a group dinner there, great company,
not so great food

Personal favorite: the jungle gym

No kids around, but Owl liked it

Zebra teeter-totter

And, not least, just outside the gate, an African food truck

Well, food wagon pulled by a tractor

On The Road In Namibia, 2

It was 341k from Katima Mulilo to Mahangu and then 415k from Mahangu to our next stop, Roy's Rest Camp, near Grootfontein. We were on the road a good bit..the roads were good and there was much to see.
New sign for us...leaving gravel, onto pavement; we'd see it
rarely in the coming days

If there was one thing uplifting about Namibia it was the
excitement of these children, near a village, heading for school

Despite dire warnings, the roads in Namibia remained good;
the dire warnings were to prove true in a couple more days

Countryside

Women carrying children and 5 gallon buckets--for water--
sometimes, evidently, for miles

In other places, poverty far less stark

On the left, one of the ubiquitous taxi vans

Alas, the zebra-striped Mini would have been a great shot
