Graveyard Of The Atlantic Museum

We visited the excellent (and free) Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum on Hatteras Island. The Outer Banks have seen sinkings for centuries now...a dangerous shoreline, hazardous weather, intersection of major ocean currents, and wars...lots of wars. The origins of the US Coast Guard are here too in the life-saving organizations of the 19th century.

Model of a WWI German submarine; many active then off the Cape
waters in 1918; of course it was in WWII that most of the sinkings
occurred here...1942 was the "Happy Times" for German submariners,
attacking many ships, particularly tankers, coming up from the Gulf
of Mexico...
