Art/Architectural Walk, 2

Continuing our art/architecture walking tour, December 9th...

Next up was the historic Marquette Building, among
the first steel-framed skyscrapers; an example of the
Chicago School, a winner of just about every architectural/
historic award

Our main interest was the lobby and its several Tiffany mosaics
glorifying Father Marquette, the "discovery" of the area, the Encounter
with its residents....more Tiffany glass, mother of pearl, etc.

But within was a bit of a surprise...the building has long been owned
by the MacArthur Foundation (the "genius" foundation), and the
Foundation has really owned up to the realities beyond the Marquette
myth....

"The Dishonesty of the Marquette Building," well worth clicking
and reading; similar remarks apply to the Tiffany murals

Beyond lay a large exhibit on what really happened, especially to
the native peoples...

And, not surprisingly...

Moving right along, now to the Rookery, another oldish Chicago
landmark of major importance

Inside the light court

Yes, sort of like a bird cage; restored to Frank Lloyd
Wright's 1906 design

You can see the famous oriel staircase a bit

Anyhow, the FLW Foundation is here as well as the gift shoppe

Elevator door and details

Original interior column revealed

Beautiful place

At the Quincy station on the L, pretty much original, we thought,
some period posters

Nice touch
