As in previous visits, our main interest in Barcelona is in its Modernist architecture, the Spanish version of art nouveau. There are instances of modernism all over Spain, but Barcelona's concentration and centrality in the movement make it special. So mostly we just walk the streets, mostly in the Eixample district, our copy of the Modernism Route guide and map in hand, our eyes mostly up in the air, looking at the glorious facades. And plenty of other things too. On this day, April 13th, we walked mostly the Ramblas de Catalunya, north of the Plaza, veering from one side street to the next.

The "ages of man" is a popular artistic theme, from the Renaissance, but we'd never seen it done entirely with female figures; Casa Garriga Nogues |
