A Week In Washington, DC

From Cary, Delta flew us to DCA and the Metro took us to NOMA and daughter Rachel's house near Truxton Circle. We had a great week seeing her, her 3rd floor renovation, meeting her friend Ed, and visiting some of the sights in DC. It was by no means our first visit. And we had some great meals. All this in addition to Vicki's doing the taxes and my research/planning for Madrid and beyond. First, a few of the meals...then the museums...

At Stellina Pizzeria with Rachel and Ed...my anchovy pizza (actually,
nearly a puttanesca)

Costco now carries pastrami and corned beef from NYC's Carnegie
Deli, Vicki's one-time favorite, and Rachel bought a package of it...
above, one of several Reubens I concocted

When the restaurant is crowded and the conversation is fun, I often
forget to take pix...our best meal was with Rachel and Ed at Le Diplomate...
here, the profiteroles and flan...

Not pictured...the wonderful oysters and mussels I had, Vicki's veal, etc.

At a Pennsylvania Ave. bistro, en route to the Mall, my Alsatian

We spent a few hours at the Phillips Collection, mainly to see the Mucha exhibition
visitng there
We've seen our share of Mucha's work, in Paris, Prague, and Moravsik
Krumlov, with many pix on the posts of this blog...due to preservation
concerns (presumably), the lighting in the exhibition was quite low,
so I didn't take many pix

Fortunately, the lighting is never low on the Phillips' great treasure,
Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party

An interesting item in one of the stairwells...stained light...

A Monet, among several in the permanent collection...above the cliffs

Moving right along, now at the National Gallery of Art, admiring more
Renoirs and others

Including this gorgeous six-panel screen, Eduard Vuillard, Place Vintimille,

Interesting buildings and monuments along our walks

No longer Trump International...

Our visit to the Mall and Tidal Basin coincided with the
annual kite festival

"Japanese" drummers..."Climb Mt. Niitaka" I always think when

Interim Update #1,286

We have moved on, and the blog is now 2 weeks behind, posts from Washington, DC, and Madrid yet to appear. We're in Nice, now, Vieux Nice, in an apartment on Rue du Lycee, our base for the next four weeks. I'll begin to catch up when the rains arrive this weekend.

Return To Cary

From Tallahassee we drove on March 18th to Cary, NC, to visit daughter Rebecca and family, and notably, grand-daughter Penelope; and also to transition from being Disney adults to European tourists. This required much time at our storage unit in Cary, sorting, packing, etc. We did have time for a little fun.

Traditional tea at Rebecca's (actually a brunch)

At the Cary REI, trying on a roof-top carrier

Our storage unit, as full as ever, but remarkably well organized...

In Tallahassee With Susan And Ken

We finished our Lake Buena Vista apartment lease on March 15th and drove forthwith to Tallahassee, to visit college friends Susan and Ken for a weekend+. Highlights, as always, included conversations, light and heavy, great conviviality, food, and drink, and a tour of nearby Maclay Gardens state park, where Susan is a master gardener volunteer. She had other horticultural responsibilities that day, so assistant-to-the-master-gardener Ken led our tour.

A Lego model of an old VW camper, several of which Ken and Susan
have owned--like us

On the trail at Maclay Gardens...the camellias were a bit past their
prime--which must have been glorious--but the azaleas were in full
bloom and reminded us of the many great houses and gardens we
have seen in the UK

Moss everywhere

Lake Hall

Interpretive display inside the house...originally a cotton plantation,
then a vineyard (!!!), then a quail hunting "plantation," then someone's
winter residence and garden...the Maclays were descended from the
Fleischmanns...of yeast and gin (!!!) fame...then, mid-20th century,
donated it to the state

St. Patrick's Day repas...the dessert was this Guinness Cake...not
pictured were the corned beef, the cabbage and onions, the soda bread...
a real treat for Vicki and me (although I am only spiritually Irish)
