Out on the west side of Lewis is a somewhat preserved broch, Doune Broch, one of those circular, double-walled towers the residents of Scotland put up in the Bronze Age and thereafter. Sort of a predecessor to the tower houses, I guess. Shaped, originally, like one of those nuclear reactor cooling towers. Animals on the ground floor, etc. This one was inhabited until the 1st century BC. |
