Details Of Chartres' Windows

I never can remember whether it's God or the Devil that's in the details. God, according to Einstein, I think. Anyhow, below are a fraction of some of the details in Chartres' window, mostly the lower-down, more easily photographed ones. Much is familiar Biblical stuff, much is lives of various saints, some is depiction of life in the 12th and 13th century--those are the ones we like best--and then the unusual/lurid/humorous items we also like. It's a fascinating experience, looking at all the windows for hours on end, and also a painful one, in the neck. But it's a small price to pay.
Saul/Paul on the road to Damascus

Rub-a-dub-dub, three men in a tub

International garment workers, again

Not a Biblical story

Ouch!

Carpenters' and wheel-wrights' window

Throwing dice on a checkerboard

Blacksmiths and furriers

Apothecary

Batting practice

Presenting Joseph's coat of many colors

Joseph riding a camel in Egypt

Something about the perils of drinking?

Noah's ark

Annunciation

A replacement window, I think, given by the architects of the United States

My favorites are the windows donated by the tradesmen. It gives such a great look at a lost age.
